I let them sleep in today - they just had to eat breakfast faster...

Today we headed off to Idar-Oberstein. Our first stop was the “Steinkaulenberg” gem mine. We hiked to, took an interesting tour of, and hiked back to the bus that then took us to the historic grindery. There, Alex, my father and Udo were waiting with our picnic lunch.

After eating, we took a tour of the grindery. In the mean time, Udo cleared up our remnants and headed back so he could start preparing supper.

After finally getting Chuck back on the bus, the busdriver dropped us off just next to the market place downtown. A couple of us (Alex, my father and I) had more sense that to traipse all the way up to the church, and then on to the castle - some were forced to (now, it wasn’t that bad, was it Larry?)

After several hours of a nice, peaceful, restful, warm, sunny break at an outdoor café on the marketplace, we returned back to “headquarters” for supper. Udo made spiessbraten that evening. That is a filled, rolled pork roast grilled on a spit. It is filled with just salt, pepper, just a little paprika and onions.

This was also the evening that quite a few of the “locals” joined us for dinner and socialising. Jet lag had settled some, to bed-time was postponed tonight - everybody was to busy yapping.
