Oh, yes, the “Moselle Tour”.

Confused the heck out of the busdriver (we had a different one today) and Suzi (who joined us for today’s tour)... I had originally planned: Bernkastel-Kues, Traben-Trarbach, Zell, Cochem and Enkirch.

Well, during the night before, I decided - nope. We’re going to drive to Luxembourg and then drive along the Moselle to Enkirch (that part stayed).

In Luxembourg we visited the American and German War Cemeteries. It was foggy - but as someone put it “that fitted the surrounding”. You see, we had only ordered sun for Germany - hadn’t thought of ordering sun for Luxembourg. Afterwards we parked at “the parking lot” in Luxembourg - anyone who has travelled with visitors to Luxembourg knows exactly which one that is... (It’s the one overlooking the valley) - and had lunch. I had “forced” everyone to make sandwiches during breakfast...

On to Trier: a city that is over 2000 years old! We stopped at the amphitheater - some got culture, some got Italian ice-cream. The busdriver then took us up to a neat “view spot” where we could see the whole city. From there, the two of us planned the route through town. We stopped at the Basilica for a while, with the opportunity for those fast-footed enough to head over to the cathedral. After getting back on the bus - we passed the “Porta Nigra” on the way out of the city towards the Moselle.

We drove through the valley with its steep vineyards and stopped in Bernkastel-Kues for about an hour.

Traben-Trarbach got a quick drive-through, and on we headed to Enkirch for the wine-tasting where my parents, Udo, Helga and Dagmar met us..

At the wine-tasting, Mr. Immich explained about the grapes, the harvest and how wine is made. In their cellar room, we sat down and learned more about the difference in the different wine types - of course, we were able to taste the differences first hand... I had chosen a supper called “Tresterfleisch”. It is a local speciality - meat cooked in something similar to grappa.

Well, to say the least - we were all in quite cheerful.

OK. I’ll tell the story before someone else does... Mrs. Immich came up to me and asked if I would translate a joke to the guests as she told it. No problem - my simultaneous translating was getting pretty good. So she started telling the joke - I translated - she continued - I translated - she continued - I translated - the group just about fell off of their chairs laughing (not due to the wine) - it took me a little while to realise what was so funny - I hadn’t registered that the last line of the joke I translated had been already told in ENGLISH... I did translate it fluently, without a mistake, though - and that after my fourth (small) glass of wine ;-)

After the wine and food was all gone, we headed back up the hill where we decided that after trying the finished wine it was time to try the new wine “Federweißer”. So we did. The bus driver had to take the bus back to its garage anyway - which so happens to be next to the restaurant where we enjoyed some more to drink.
